Beyond the Obvious: 5 Ways/Tips to Live in Uncertain Times

Taking care of yourself — sleeping well, eating healthy, and exercising– are great ways to help manage these crazy days the best we can. And some days are better than others with the daily challenges of time, space, finances, virtual versus in person, etc. How can we nourish ourselves so we can stay more steady amid all the change? Here are some suggestions on living better during this unsettled time:

  • Cultivate a practice. Can be meditation, visualization, prayer, other contemplation, yoga, creating art, taking a daily walk, simply breathing, bird watching, journaling, spending time with a pet, reading, singing, listening to music, taking a bath, etc. As we turn from one thing to another to another, it can help to reserve even just a few minutes for yourself, a specific amount of time per week or day. We are feeding ourselves.
  • Keep up with the important people in your life. You’re frustrated, isolated, tired. So are the other folks in your household, other family members who aren’t living with you, your friends, people who are older or less healthy, longtime neighbors. Checking in with the important others in your life– for a hug, a chat, a kind word or gesture–can remind us that we’re not alone with the now and that we can feed ourselves by feeding others.
  • Encourage inspiration. In whatever time you have available, make a conscious display of inspiration– a few pictures, a board, quotes, a computer file or container of items that inspire you– made up of recent and past events, milestones, achievements, images, music that can help lift you into positive memories.
  • Take a break from the 24/7. Step back from the information flow for a few beats—social media and all media, really, and others’ opinions– when you need to make important decisions. Consider– what are all the options? What is best for me and my family or household? What is most important?

By shifting perspective, we can move to adjust and adapt to change and make our present a bit easier to bear. What could better look like?
